United Taconite was fined nearly $23,000 after Minnesota regulators said the company missed required emissions testing at its Fairlane plant.
According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), United Taconite violated its air permit after it failed to complete required testing by November 2023 to confirm that particulate matter emissions were within permit limits.
United Taconite has since submitted a plan to complete future testing on time and stay in compliance.
Cleveland Cliffs, which owns United Taconite, released the following statement disputing the penalty.
