Minnesota Supreme Court hears case on if religious institutions can discriminate against employees

A school librarian was fired after she came out as transgender. Now, the justices will determine if the firing is covered by the First Amendment.

RICHFIELD, Minn. — The Minnesota Supreme Court heard oral arguments Tuesday in a case that looks at whether a religious school can discriminate against employees in secular roles.

Reyzl Grace MoChridhe, a librarian, was fired from the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield after she came out as transgender. Gender Justice filed the lawsuit on her behalf, stating the school violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on protected characteristics such as sex, gender identity, race and religion.
