ST PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is suing the U.S. Postal Service over new rules that would change how states administer mail-in voting.
Ellison joined attorneys general from 25 states and the District of Columbia in filing the lawsuit Wednesday. The coalition is asking a federal court to block the rules from taking effect.
The lawsuit challenges a USPS rule finalized Aug. 21 that would require states to provide the Postal Service with lists of voters who are eligible to receive mail ballots. The rule also establishes new requirements for the design of mail ballot envelopes and requires states to receive USPS approval for those envelopes.
