A South Carolina inmate used a pencil to escape from a 50-year-old jail building, highlighting security flaws.
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina inmate briefly walked free after using a pencil to escape from jail on Tuesday, and it was all captured on security footage.
Charles Dieterich, 30, popped his cell door open and walked through a kitchen area through an unlocked door before scaling the barbed-wire fence. According to the Chesterfield County Detention Center, Dieterich "manipulated the cell door" by lifting it enough to place a pencil into the locking mechanism, allowing him to slide it open.
The jail in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, has had security problems for years, CNN reported.
